Your favorite bullion coins?
Meaning modern gold bullion.
I like Gold Eagle, but the weird thing about it is, they add a bit of silver so the coin appears a bit whiter than say Krugerrand. it's nice and durable. Now, Krugerrands are a different shade and also very durable. They good thing is, they are alloyed only with copper. Arguably not as pretty as Gold Eagles. the prettiest coins, IMO are Australian Kangaroos. The shine is incredible. They are 999 fine so must be taken care of. If you put it in your pocket with another coin, it will get scratched, unlike Eagles or Krugerrands. Maples are pretty in their own way but very, very easy to scratch. They have this mirorr finish and it will show a million tiny marks on it if you handle them at all. I won't get them for that reason, and if I do, they never come out from their plastic covers, but then what's the point if you cannot handle the coin? 22K is more practical. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
Unfortunately, I'm a cheap-ass, and I usually can't bring myself to buy anything other than Krugs. The only exception I made was when the guy at CMI told me that the Lunar Dogs were going for about the same as GAEs, and that they were a steal at that price. Unfortunately, I was stupid and only got two - the guy was right, and they command much higher premiums now. And they are good-looking coins. I think the Lunar Dragons are neat, too.
I also like the Buffaloes. Don't own any, but I might get a couple for grins. They're also .9999 fine, so you won't be able to fondle those, either. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
Most people I meet trust the Maples because of the minting and brilliance.
People question Eagles color but know its gold and its design is superior. Krugs get that, its from South Africa, so it must be gold, they are my #1 for profitability and handling. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I started out with bars and GAE's, but I think you're missing the boat by limiting yourself to "modern" coins. My current preference and focus is the European fractional stuff and the circulated ungraded Liberty $10 Eagles. Both of these are cheaper than fractional GAE's or other fractional stuff for that matter.
For near the same price of a full ounce modern coin you can get smaller sizes that will be usable when gold gets to huge prices and you only need to sell a part of an ounce. Won't get back a lot of "change" from smaller purchases. IMHO a good strategy is to get a variety of sizes and types, on the cheap of course after you have your bullion base established. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
Depends. To look at, Australian Kangaroos and Lunars followed closely by a slew of others. As a store of value, Krugerrands.

No one has mentioned the .9999 Philharmonic which is 24k, inexpensive and beautiful. GAE's are a nice design and The queen on the canadian coins is just plain ugly IMO. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I don't really buy gold as bullion since I can't afford it in large amounts. In other words, I buy a piece or two at a time, usually fractionals, of what pleases me, without much mind to resale of them. My favorites, in order: First place is a tie between Australian lunars and Australian Kangaroos. Love them both! In second place: the French and Swiss 20 Franc pieces. Third place: Austrian philharmonics. Fourth place: Maples. After that, I don't really care. I don't much care for GAEs or Krugs. Pandas look better in silver. What I own most of: GAE fractionals. I don't really care for them, but I did buy more of these just in case I want to sell a little gold. I figured I wouldn't mind selling them as much. I'm afraid I'd go all Gollum-like if I had to let go of my Aussie gold!

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
1) Austrailian Kangaroos
2) Canadian Maples 3) Austrian Philhamonics The kangaroos are just the best looking coin for bullion in my opinion (2007 is amazing). If I have a large order I can get them = to the price of maples from a local dealer. If I have a small order 1-3 ounces then I get maples from Apmex. I was disappointed in the buffalo, I thought someone from the mint would have atleast looked at the other 24k coins on the market and tried to make them look a little better than a lump of gold. I have a few krugs and a few fractional GAE's but I prefer 24k. You will be suprised that you have many more options to sell bullion that is 24k to people who make jewelry. At least in my area. |

Who on God's earth (to acquire Au) is going to pay for a fractional size coin when they can get a 1-ounce for the same money? |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
Good question. MOdern coins which have weight on them reinforce the fact the coin's value is based on its content, not fiat.
the dollar and the eagle are units of weight, not worth. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
problem with Philharmonic is that it's too thin. Also seems to be the worst selling coin. I've had a coin dealer offer to trade me a Philharmonic for a Gold Eagle.
On the positive note, it doesn't scratch as bad as Maples and maybe even more durable than Kangaroos. Weird, they are all 24K. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
Sovereigns(sp?) If they were good enough for James Bond:cool2: , there good enough for me.

When gold is $610 a single GAE is at $632.00. So for around $4.00 per ounce more you have it broken down into smaller increments and can sell parts of an ounce. Please, I'm not quite so stupid as to suggest you pay $632 for .1867 ounces of gold. |

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
The premium is way too high. Especially for 90% ... I prefer .999 trade rounds and 10 oz .999 bars. |

that goes for bartering with them too |

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I'm with Sturdly on this one if you can buy one oz in either one coin, or four or five, for roughly the same price, which do you think would be easier to sell if gold was $2000??
(And as they still make the sovereigns, don't they qualify as 'modern bullion'??) |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
The one which has its weight on it vs. an uknown quantity of metal in a sovereign, french 20 francs, etc.
In the future, after the green token disappears into the nothingness it came from, it will be cruicial to educate the public that the dollar (or any unit) is a unit of weight, not worth, and to that effect, it's vital to have the coin's weight and fineness on it. 1 oz, 1/5 oz, or 20 grams, 10 grams of gold 999 fine or 23K fine or whatever and so on. |
Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I like my buffalo proof the best, it has the best shine. Not sure if the regular buffalo will be as shiny. My second favorite are the kangaroos, it looks almost painted. Third are my krugs, I can actually hold them and stack them and feel its weight. Fourth are my platinum eagles, though not really shiny. My SAEs, I leave alone except for one that I like to flip.

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
:D Not trying to rain on anybody's parade...
The Krugs are the most widely counterfeited coins in the world...bar none. Make sure you buy from reputable sources. I've ran across some excellent fake Krugs so perfect they fooled 99% of the morons who bought them...even the weight was perfect. Eagles and Maples for me...The Chinese and The Bulgarians pick the easy stuff to counterfeit. Europe is having an all out rash of counterfeit Euro Bills and Euro Coins right now...be careful. :D :D :D |

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I can only make small purchases periodically, so I decided to limit what I buy to 1 oz. and 1/10 oz. pieces - mostly AGE by date (I know, very strange! :confused_ma: ). Mint rolls of anything in AU are way beyond my price range and out of the question. Because of the political climate at one time, I guess Krugs are very hard to come by in dates other than 74-83 - at least I haven't seen any.

Re: Your favorite bullion coins?
I love Chinese Pandas. Not the most economic purchase, I know, but hey, the beauty of the coins makes it easier for me to put down the money. We all have our little tricks to convince us to spend on PMs rather than a new widescreen telly. ;)
